Carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is a dipeptide found naturally in muscle, brain and other innervated tissues in animals and humans. It is often referred to as a neuropeptide, due to its brain mass protective properties.
It is an aminoacid with antioxidant properties, which support many age-related conditions. The specific uses of l-carnosine include support for the skin (elasticity), joints, digestive system and memory (granular).
It is formed by a process involving the enzyme carnosine synthetase, which binds the amino acids alanine and histidine. This process takes place mainly in muscles and brain and is kept in balance by carnisinases, specific enzymes designed to inactivate carnosine in tissues or blood.
Muscle carnosine concentration is related to lifespan, making it a promising biomarker of ageing.
