It is an antihyperglycaemic agent, which lowers abnormal blood sugar levels. The effects of the acid are very rapid and exert their inhibitory action at the plasma membrane level. The glucose receptor blocking effect is possibly due to the acid's acyl group, which appears to influence the cellular enzyme system, particularly in mitochondria. The suppressive effect lasts for about one hour. As a result, the blood sugar consistency decreases.
