Gymnema sylvestre is a climbing, woody, evergreen plant species that is not common in the Iberian Peninsula. The popular English name is Periploca of the Woods. It is mainly used It is also considered hepatoprotective and is of phytotherapeutic interest. 

Gymnemic acid is used as an anti-diabetic agent as it produces an increase in pancreatic beta cells which increases insulin levels. It is an antihyperglycaemic agent, which lowers abnormal blood sugar levels. The effects of the acid are very rapid and exert their inhibitory action at the plasma membrane level. The glucose receptor blocking effect is possibly due to the acid's acyl group, which appears to influence the cellular enzyme system, particularly in mitochondria. The suppressive effect lasts for about one hour. As a result, the blood sugar consistency decreases.
