Uva ursi extract comes from the uva ursi plant, an evergreen shrub with dark fleshy leaves and small bell-shaped flower clusters. It is cultivated in the northern hemisphere with relative frequency on several continents. It has traditionally been used for generations as a urinary tract antiseptic and diuretic. It can be used as a general tonic.
It has astringent properties that relax muscles and strengthen irritated and inflamed tissue. It helps to neutralise acidity and increase urine flow. The astringent properties also help those who have problems with bedwetting.
Uva ursi contains hydroquinone and derivatives, which help treat urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis and nephritis. Arbutin is an important active compound. It is absorbed in the stomach and has antimicrobial, astringent and disinfectant properties that help soothe irritation, reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
