Also referred to as winter cherry, Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that grows in Asia and Africa. Ashwagandha is one of the most revered plants in traditional Ayurvedic medicine in India. It is an upright, grayish, shrub with yellow or green flowers and small red berries. It mainly grows on wasteland, but its roots and leaves are widely cultivated for medicinal use. The species is widely distributed in the northwestern India and the Punjab plains, as well as some parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. 

Ashwagandha is one of the rasayana herbs in Ayurveda — one of the herbs that purportedly promotes youth and longevity and alleviates suffering. It is thought to particularly promote rejuvenation in men; to strengthen bone marrow, muscle, and semen; and to imbue the user with intellectual facility and youthful vitality. However, it also is believed to be quite helpful to the elderly by providing energy and relieving pain, inflammation, and nervous debility.
