Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a flowering plant that grows 15-40 cm high. It grows in many areas, including Europe, Central Asia, and northern Africa. It's eaten as a legume and used in female health supplements.

Red clover leaves are eaten as salad greens, and the flowers are dried for use in teas. The Chinese have traditionally used an infusion of red clover flowers internally as an expectorant, and as an infusion to treat bronchial asthma. In Europe, red clover was used as a medicinal herb to aid in liver and digestive ailments. Various Native American cultures ate the leaves as food, and used the plant for sore eyes and as a salve for burns, as well as for cough, fevers, and menopause.

People commonly use red clover for symptoms of menopause, weak and brittle bones, breast pain, male-pattern baldness, and many other conditions. Red clover contains chemicals called phytoestrogens that are similar to the hormone estrogen, and is a rich source of isoflavones.
