Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is the dark purple berry from the European elder tree, a deciduous tree that grows up to 15 m. It is native to Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. The use of elderberry as a medicine dates back to antiquity, according to the writings of Hippocrates. It has a long history of use for cold and flu. In the 17th century, physician Blochwich treated common ailments (including headache, toothache, mouth and throat conditions, cough, asthma, etc) with elder preparations.
The berries and flowers of elderberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost the immune system, as well as reduce inflammation, lessen stress, and protect the heart. Elderberry extract is widely used to treat the common cold, flu, and sinus inflammation thanks to its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
It is widely used for immune-supporting properties and as a potent source of phenolic acids, flavonols and anthocyanins, a potent antioxidant.
