Dandelion is a low-growing perennial herb with jaggedly toothed leaves and a thick root, native to Europe. Dandelion is found throughout mild climates of the Northern Hemisphere. Present throughout the plant is a bitter, milky latex.
The 17th century British botanist, herbalist, and physician Nicholas Culpeper wrote that dandelion leaf and root have an ‘opening and cleansing quality’. Dandelion has been used ethnobotanically in Persian and East Indian societies for centuries. Various Native American tribes also consumed dandelion greens for food and as a tonic to purify the blood, treat slow-healing wounds, stomachache, sore throat and menstrual cramps.
Dandelion root extract is recommended for treating digestive disturbances, for stimulating diuresis, and for treating loss of appetite and dyspepsia.
