Policosanol, a mixture of 8 high molecular weight sugarcane wax alcohols, of very long-chain, has been shown protective effects in experimental brain ischemia.
The wax alcohols are aliphatic alcohols purified from sugar cane wax, the main component of which is octacosanol. Octacosanol is a primary fatty alcohol, which has been studied for its potential benefits in treating patients with Parkinson's disease, as well as its ability to inhibit the production of high cholesterol, prevent cardiovascular disease and help prevent atherosclerosis.
Numerous studies have reported that policosanol can substantially improve cholesterol levels to about the same degree as the most effective drugs used for this purpose. It also appears to be useful for intermittent claudication, a condition caused by hardening of the arteries. It appears to have blood thinning properties similar to those of aspirin.
