Policosanol is a supplement derived from plant waxes. The first policosanol supplements were produced by research laboratories in Cuba, which were conducting research on sugar cane derivatives. For more than a decade, policosanol supplements have been widely available in Canada and Central and South America, primarily to help with cholesterol level management. 

Policosanol has been found to be a safe and effective lipid-lowering agent. This means that it contributes to combating high cholesterol and heart disease. Namely, it plays a role in preventing the build-up of fats, cholesterol and other substances in the arteries, as well as reducing cholesterol production in the liver (acting similarly to statins). Policosanol is also an anticoagulant, may help to prevent blood clots and to help with circulation.
