Policosanol is a chemical most often derived from the waxy coating of Cuban Cane Sugar. It can also be made from other plants, such as wheat. It has been used frequently to treat high cholesterol levels. The mixture is mainly derived from sugar cane but can also be obtained from fruits, nuts, beeswax, seeds, and cereal grains.
Policosanol also decreases the stickiness of cells in the blood known as platelets, and several studies claim that it does so with a potency rivaling statin therapy. On the other hand, leg discomfort is also an indication that you may need policosanol, especially when it is caused by muscle cramps after exercise.
